Preface to the Second Edition I feel immense pleasure ín presenting the second edition of this book, "Lucent's High School English Translation". It has been designed to enable the learners to have a functional approach to English language learning. To achieve this principal objective this book has been written on a new plan and technique. A proper co-ordination between grammar and translation has deliberately been maintained from the beginning to the end. Special emphasis has been given on sentence formation under various situations that we encounter in our day-to-day lives. The structures given here fulfil the need of those learners preparing for Board or University examinations. The structures are essentially related to realI life, and not confined to examination hall situations. A fairly large number of word-meanings have been used to enhance active vocabulary of the learners. Adequate attention has been given to Four Way Practice i.e. discussing various sentence patterns: affirmative, negative, interrogative, negative-interrogative alongwith Wh-interrogatives. The chapters on Causative Verbs, Voice and Narration have been discussed so skilfully that they arouse natural interest amnong the learners. Plenty of exercises for translation into English and English to Hindi have been given under each head to make a practical application of what the learners have followed.A natural flow and continuity has been maintained throughout the book. It will enable the learners to express their thoughts and feelings fluently and confidently. I am sure that they will have a firm grasp of the basic principles of the language. Mukul and my student Abhishek Kumar Mishra for their steady encouragement and goodwill, Finally I extend my gratitude to all my well-wishers who dírectly or indirectly helped me in my work.
